Dive Brief:
- "Software engineer" is the term employers search for most often with Indeed's resume search feature, according to a report from the company's Hiring Lab.
- "Buyer planner" came in second, while "editor," "developer" and "graphic artist" round out the top five for the last two years of search activity. Indeed said it may be no surprise that high-skill tech talent remains in demand, but it's also worth noting that growing demand for truck drivers is evident as ‘class a cdl/driver’ ranked seventh.
- The report also revealed some tech skills that were less popular: SQL Developer and SAS showed lower growth year over year.
Dive Insight:
It’s certainly a candidate-driven market, and employers face stiff competition for the most in-demand talent. Tech workers in particular often have to be obtained at a premium to beat the competition in 2018 — upwards of 20% above market salary rates, one report from Forrester predicts.
Many companies are using big data and AI for recruitment to hedge their bets against the rising competition. Indeed, as well as other job boards and professional sites, like LinkedIn, have delved into data analysis to help employers plan for and fulfill their hiring needs.
And as challenging as it may be to find talent for today’s needs, many companies are planning ahead for jobs that don’t even exist today, hoping to stay ahead of the curve and prevent needing to chase talent at a premium.
