As employers grapple with a severe talent shortage, especially for certain hard skills, many are turning away from traditional degree programs and instead looking into alternative credentials as a signal for skilled talent.
For many, this has proven harder to follow through on than to talk about, in part due to lingering questions about which credentials are credible in the first place. But studies, experts and leaders — including President Joe Biden — say credentials will be a key part of the talent future.
That’s because credentials, as opposed to degree programs, may improve access to high-skilled jobs, heightening diversity and bolstering the kind of career development opportunities that employers can offer.
