Dive Brief:
- Despite the notion that jobs in areas such as technology and engineering are high-stress and too demanding, a new Glassdoor survey finds that when it comes to work-life balance, workers in those two areas reported being very satisfied with their work-life situation.
- Scoring the highest for work-life balance are data scientist, search engine optimization manager and talent acquisition specialist.
- The Washington Post reports that while workers in those professions believe their lives are relatively balanced in today's 24/7 work world, work-life balance in general is down of late. Glassdoor says that in 2009, people reported an average rating (on a scale of 5 being most satisfied) of 3.5, which fell to 3.4 in 2012 and 3.2 so far in 2015.
Dive Insight:
Almost every position among the top 25 at Glassdoor is related to either technology, engineering or recruiting. Nowhere on the list is anything specifically HR, though jobs such as talent acquisition specialist, recruiting coordinator and instructional designer have an HR-facing connection.
Of the top 25 jobs happy with work-life balance, the most unusual is substitute teacher, which checks in at #5, while social media manager rounds out the top 5 with its #4 ranking.
