Applications for the 2027 SHRM Labs WorkplaceTech Accelerator close Sunday, Nov. 1, leaving founders a few days to submit before the program’s annual window shuts. The accelerator admits one cohort a year, so a team missing this deadline waits until next fall.
Competition is tight because each cohort is intentionally small. SHRM Labs accepts five or fewer startups a year so it can tailor support to each one.
The founders still on the fence usually have a specific worry. Here is what the program’s terms say about each.
Who Can Apply
Applicants must have a software product, not a service, that addresses a real problem in work, the workplace, or the workforce. Companies need paying customers and evidence of growth and impact. We've had companies at the Seed, Series A and Series B apply. The funding stage matters less than these conditions. Testlify joined the 2026 cohort without outside investment, and co-founder and COO Namrata Kamdar says the program gave the company a useful network, credibility, and candid feedback as it grew.
How the Hybrid Program Fits Around Running a Company
The program runs March 23 through July 30, 2027, but it is hybrid by design. The fixed in-person commitments are three: kick-off events March 23–24 at SHRM headquarters in Washington, D.C., one additional SHRM-hosted conference, and the SHRM HR-X Live!, June 27–30 in Chicago. Founders are not expected to step away from running the company for a quarter.
Pairing Investment with the World’s Largest HR Community
The investment is a $200,000 SAFE note from SHRM Labs, with access to its investor network and the potential for milestone-based follow-on funding. Alumni rank the rest of the package higher than the check: a curated advisory council of HR and business executives, structured customer feedback, conference showcases in front of thousands of HR decision-makers, and the SHRM Labs alumni network.
Defining Workplace Technology Broadly
Founders who do not think of themselves as “HR tech” often self-select out. The actual criterion is a technology product positively affecting work, the workforce, or the workplace, and the 2026 cohort shows how far it stretches:
- Clearbrief, a legal-tech platform used by roughly 70% of the AmLaw 20, qualified because its verifiable investigation reports solve an HR problem.
- Mento matches leaders to executive coaches across more than 100 variables.
- Testlify runs skills assessments for more than 1,500 companies in more than 50 countries.
- Onwards HR centralizes offboarding and severance compliance.
Building a Strong Application in the Final Days
Applications are scored on product maturity, market traction, business viability, team strength, and impact on the future of work. The stage rewards evidence over prose: customer counts, revenue trajectory, retention, who is on the team, and a clear line from the product to a problem HR leaders recognize.
A company with real traction already has the material; the next few days are for assembling it. As SHRM President and CEO Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, said in a statement, “innovation for innovation’s sake isn’t enough.” Founders who can show outcomes in numbers do not need weeks to say so.
