Dive Brief:
- Facebook is once again the top tech company to work for, according to Glassdoor’s ninth annual Employees’ Choice Awards, reports Fortune. The 2017 front-runner toppled Airbnb, the No. 1 tech firm for 2016. Facebook topped the list three years in a row from 2011 to 2013, but hadn’t placed first since then.
- The awards list the top 50 companies to work for based on employees’ anonymous ratings. The criteria are based on employees’ best reasons for working at a company, their overall satisfaction, how well they think the CEO is running the company and the downsides of working there. Facebook ranked No. 2 out of 50 companies in all industries behind Bain & Company.
- Employees also rated their companies on workplace quality, including compensation, benefits, career opportunities, senior management, work-life balance, culture and values. Twenty tech companies were on the list of 50 best places to work this year, compared with 21 last year.
Dive Insight:
Employees’ views on workplace quality are critical. These are the attributes that surveys say mean the most to them. Any company that scores consistently high in these areas deserves and can expect loyalty, engagement and exceptionally high levels of productivity from its staff.
As the year winds down, awards lists like Glassdoor’s (and others) will provide employer's guidance on best practices for engaging workers. The respondents’ anonymity in the Employees’ Choice Awards almost guarantees honesty. Therefore, the results provide metrics other employers can use to improve their own practices.
